This month we recognize Sports Eye Safety Month

With the spring, as well as more opportunity to be involved in outdoor sports, comes a rise in the prevalence of eye injuries related to sports. Each season, many children and adults sustain sports related eye injuries that could be averted with proper safety measures and information. Protecting your eyes while participating in sports is important especially in high-risk sports or those that bring you out into the sun such as hockey, baseball, football, badminton, wrestling, volleyball, or golf.

Decrease your risk of a sports related eye injury by using the correct protective eyewear suited to the activity you're involved in. Protective eyewear will keep you out of harm's way and will also have lenses that minimize your exposure to ultra-violet light for outdoor activities. Eye wear made specifically for sports is made to withstand certain conditions. Regular glasses usually don't meet the minimum requirements for full protection, meaning that the smallest collision can mean a serious eye injury that could potentially threaten your eyesight.

Eye safety means more than using the correct protective eyewear. Your sight is an essential factor of your ability to play sports, so you need to have clear eyesight. If you already require glasses, you'll need protective sports glasses with a prescription that will also help to correct your vision. If you're fitted with contacts, you may need a different lens than the ones you normally wear. Call your eye care professional regarding the options that are right for you.

Different sports are subject to differing needs and risks, so it's important to let your eye care professional identify your unique situation and fit you with the correct glasses or lenses to maximize your eyesight needs. This will help you give you the boost you need to excel and have fun safely.

All sports have differing needs and risks, so it's important to allow your eye care professional to identify your unique needs and suggest the right glasses or contact lenses best for your eyesight needs. This will only help you have the edge that'll help you excel and enjoy sports safety.

In order to be healthy, it is important to be active, play sports and exercise. Nevertheless remember never to overlook the safety of your eyes and vision. Taking these additional steps will only allow you to benefit from more years of playing sports and healthy vision.
